The Jesus Shoes.

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

Hello everyone :) This post is about the process of painting the Jesus Shoes, and also what God revealed to me while painting them. Let's dive in.

One day at school, a friend came up to me and asked me to paint an interesting project: shoes with Jesus on them. Wow. Being honest here I was terrified! I had always avoided trying to paint Jesus in general because I didn't want to mess up painting God. What if I painted him wrong? What if it doesn't even look like a person? What if someone imagines God a different way because of a picture I painted? Those were all doubts and questions inside my head. But God told me to say yes.

Throughout my "painting career" (if you want to call it that) when I've been faced with a project I didn't know how to do, it just pushed me to rely on God even more. It does this because I know that without Him and His ideas I won't be able to complete it! It's been really amazing to see how He honors the courage it takes to say yes when the outcome is unknown. He honors you, too, when you step out when it's hard and scary.

Ok, sorry for rambling a little bit about that ;) Now on to the strategy of painting these fun shoes! I bounced ideas back and forth with my client, but he gave me a lot of freedom to do what God led me to paint. I based the picture of Jesus off of His picture depicted in Heaven is for Real. After grasping the heart of the project, I gathered supplies, put on some worship music, sat in my room, and asked God for a picture of what He wanted to do. Then I just started painting!

"I gather supplies, choose reference photos, put on some worship music, find a place to paint, talk to God, and then begin."

I have rarely finished a project in one siting. That was especially the case with the Jesus Shoes. I would spend probably five hours straight painting them and then pause for a few days. Since there were four sections to the shoes, I tried to finish at least one section before stopping. I officially completed the shoes at 2:00 a.m. on a school night, and it was so worth it to finally be done!

----If you haven't seen the shoes here are some pictures below----

The Lion and the Lamb section of the shoe really displays the power and strength of God but also His humility and gentleness. The crown of thorns and crown of jewels shows how Jesus was crucified as a criminal but yet is seated in glory with the Father. This verse really depicts that picture.

Hebrews 10:12-13 "But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet."

Ok, now the last picure: Jesus and the cross. Wow. Jesus is mighty and Holy! This verse from Revelation reminds me of how Jesus has triumphed and is glorified.

Revelation 1:13-16 "And in the midst of the lamp stands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, His feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the roar of many waters. In His right hand he held seven stars, from His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining in full strength."

That verse pretty much says it all. Pray and ask God to show you something new about His character through these pictures! He will.

I pray this blesses you,

Grace Chontos
